Mary and Max … and Adam Elliot

Last night I got to watch the feature animation, Mary and Max by Adam Elliot, for the first time.

However, this was not the first I had seen Max and Mary.  Back in January 2008 I was very lucky to be invited by Anthony Lawrence to the studio where the animation was being made and was able to meet with the staff, including Adam Elliot and his producer Melanie Coombes, as well as see all the terrific props, sets and working stations. This was an amazing experience that both my husband and I enjoyed thoroughly.  Both Adam and Melanie made us, as well as the other visitors, feel very comfortable and we were very grateful for the invitation. We were even invited to join them for drinks down at the local pub to chat further.

You can read about my visit in a previous post – Inside Claymation.

Only a few weeks ago I got to meet Adam Elliot again.  This time it was at the ACEC2010 Conference where Adam was one of keynote presenters.  He spoke entertainingly about his life and the events and circumstances that shaped his career.  I think it is incredibly important to hear from people who use technology in their life and work.  It gives a very real perspective on what we as educators are trying to achieve with our students and that we should never underestimate our students in their search for themselves.

After his presentation, Adam was also able to spend over an hour of his time meeting with people in the ‘soap box’. This was a great chance for people to ask questions and to provide time for more detailed discussions about his work.  Many of the questions related to the more technical sides of animation, as I am sure many people were now thinking about the way they can take this back to their school settings.

At the end of his ‘soap box’ time, Adam signed and sold copies of his latest movie, Mary and Max.

And here’s mine …

So back to the movie!

As it says on the blurb … “exploring friendship, autism, taxidermy, psychiatry, alcoholism, where babies come from, obesity”…and lots more.  A very touching story with its quirky Adam Elliot traits :-)
